Indie Music Couples

Cults via MPR

Cults just announced that they would release a new album, and MPR was all over it. So was I. I loved the picture that they let MPR put on their blog yesterday, mainly because it matched all of the other photo ops that couples-cum-music duos put out in the media when they promote their albums.

These pictures all tend to share the same qualities. First, the usually long-haired, doe-eyed female vocalist looks to one side, in want of a husband. But, oh, wait. Her husband (or boyfriend, or partner) is standing right next to her, staring in another direction, completely askew from the one she is looking. Usually, his hair is a bit mussed.

It used to be that these photo ops were really angsty, where the despair of love lost seemed to pervade their couple-dom. Now, I’ve been able to find a bunch of smiley ones, like from KaiserCartel and The Civil Wars.

Sadly, as I’ve read, The Civil Wars are “still not talking“, which seems so anticlimactic. The group rose to fame from their indie-country roots since their 2009 début, won Grammies, had a child, and simply dissolved their relationship, indefinitely. Plus, many of their public appearances made them look like they were the complete antithesis to the other depressed indie couple singer-songwriters out there.

Anyway, The Civil Wars put out a new album last week despite their rough year.

It’s easy to think that these couples had been pretending when they posed for pictures looking like their puppy just died. But maybe they weren’t pretending.
